Editorial: My Designed Layout

EditorialFinal

Here is my finished layout and my last project final of the module! I think out of all of the projects I’ve done this was my favourite in terms of editing. I have done a few graphic design assignments previous to this one but this one has definitely been the best for me. I could never use Photoshop before I came to Glyndwr and now I’m able to use it to create something like this. It makes me very proud of myself knowing I’ve been able to achieve this. The reason behind having the social media icons was that if this was to be used as an electronic magazine, these could provide links to my Facebook page and my Twitter account. I’ve enjoyed being able to develop as a photographer too and I have the confidence of knowing that I can take on anything and I have the ability to do anything I put my mind to.

I wanted my layout to look very simple so I took my time when placing the images and making sure they looked right and were aligned correctly. With the full page image, i’d seen on a layout I researched that they used text layered onto the image and I thought I would give it a try. Instead of just using the text, I layered it onto a rectangle shape and the opacity was at around 60% on this. My colour scheme was very simple: purple, pink and white. I’ve learnt in the past that when creating something like this, its best to just stick to three main colours for the scheme, otherwise it can begin to look messy and nothing will match. I wanted to include my logo on there too since its relevant to my own business.

I created my layout using Photoshop. I did attempt to use InDesign but because its been a while since I used it, I began to get frustrated and decided to just stick with Photoshop since I’ve been using it a lot throughout the year. I found an existing layout online for me to copy the dimensions of, just so I could get it as close to an actual layout as possible. I went with 4084 x 2737 with a 300 resolution. Once this was created, I used the Rulers just to split up the document, so I knew where the page would crease if it was a real magazine.

I’ve now done two weddings under my freelance. I was extremely nervous both times because I knew I needed to get it right and not make any major mistakes. Weddings only happen once! Once I was at the venues and began photographing, I did begin to relax and get into the swing of photographing this sort of event and my efforts seem to pay off as both of my couples loved their wedding photos. I have two more weddings this year and hopefully I can get a few for next year too.

These are a selection of layouts I found which I liked on Google. They’re all very plain and mainly contain images with very little text, more like a portfolio rather than a magazine article. I think I could take each of these layouts and take something from each of them, but I mainly want to have freedom and decide on a layout which suits me. I feel like making it more like a portfolio will make it easier for me to create something. I also think using a full page as an image is important as the majority of wedding magazines I’ve looked at seem to use this. I want to use a selection of images from both of my weddings just to show what I have already and hopefully show my development between each wedding.

I wanted to choose a topic that I know something about for this assignment. As a freelancer, I’m beginning to take on wedding photography and I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to showcase myself and see what my work could potentially look like if it were to be displayed in a magazine. This would also give me an opportunity to use my graphic design skills I have learnt over the last four years through college and my last uni. I needed to look into other layouts to give me an idea of what I could potentially create for my own layout.

ARD506 Editorial Assignment

The Design Directions brief includes a range of assignments. They intend to provide you with conceptual work, in which you develop the idea of your image and capture it with a camera, and reactive work, where you respond to the images presented to you in real time. In some cases, you must communicate your ideas BEFORE you produce the images. In others you most communicate your intentions.

Editorial

Most photographs are produced with the intention of being viewed as an individual picture. In editorial work, photographs can be reproduced in magazines and books as part of a collection or in conjunction with other images to illustrates a theme, idea, place or style. Write a short article about something or somewhere that interests you and illustrate it. Research page layouts and think of this as a double page spread.

Choose a subject and produce a photographic layout for a publication in a magazine or journal. Find something visually stimulating and of personal interest. To take a series of pictures with this is mind, helps you to view and produce your work objectively. Although the images may be of the same place or subject, use a range of shots (CU, MS, LS). You must show evidence of the thought processes that have been involved with arriving at your situation. Your research should include different types of page layouts.
